Calvin vs. Darwin: Anniversaries, Origins, Worldviews

Rev. Angus Stewart - August 12, 2009

Abstract:

2009 was both the 500th anniversary of the birth of the French Reformer, John Calvin, and the 200th anniversary of the English evolutionist, Charles Darwin.

For Darwin, man's origins lie in a primordial slime pool, and we have monkeys for our forefathers. For Calvin, man was created in the image of God, and we know our Creator in the Lord Jesus Christ. These two radically different views of man's origins shape two radically different views of ourselves, the world and God.

Rev. Angus Stewart of the Covenant Protestant Reformed Church (CPRC) in Ballymena addressed these issues historically, morally, biblically and theologically in a special lecture in Grandville, MI on August 12, 2009, entitled "Calvin versus Darwin: Anniversaries, Origins and Worldviews".

In 2009, the Protestant Reformed Theological Seminary also hosted a conference commemorating the 500th anniversary of John Calvin. Visit 500yearsofcalvin.org for more information.
